Older leeward homes and single-wall construction
On this coast the exterior boards of an older house can form the wall, with no stud cavity behind them. That changes a kitchen or bathroom: plumbing that would normally run inside a wall has to be planned around, a heavy vanity or wall cabinet needs proper backing added, and tile needs a substrate built for it. We look at the walls on the estimate visit rather than guessing.

Cesspools and permits on the Waianae Coast
If your home is still on a cesspool, find out where the system stands before a remodel that changes plumbing. Act 125, passed in 2017, requires all cesspools in Hawaii to be replaced by 2050, according to the Hawaii Department of Health. A cesspool conversion is separate work, and it is not included in the remodeling price bands on this page.
Finish work that keeps the existing layout is generally permit exempt. Moving plumbing, adding circuits or altering walls needs a DPP permit and current code. Interior alterations are generally exempt from a Special Management Area permit, according to DPP, though a building permit may still apply.
