North Shore bathrooms have one enemy that the rest of Oahu can mostly ignore: salt air. From Hale'iwa to Sunset, the trade winds carry a fine ocean mist that pits chrome, corrodes hinges, and rusts the inside of cabinets within a few years. Here's how we spec a North Shore bath that still looks new in 2036.

Fixtures: Skip Chrome, Choose PVD

Standard chrome plating will pit within 2–3 years on the North Shore. Instead, spec PVD-finished fixtures (physical vapor deposition) — Brizo, Kohler Components, and California Faucets all offer them. Matte black, brushed gold, and brushed nickel PVD finishes carry lifetime warranties and shrug off salt spray.

Hardware: Marine-Grade or Don't Bother

Look for 316 stainless steel (not 304) for any visible hardware — towel bars, robe hooks, grab bars. 316 contains molybdenum, which makes it the same alloy used on boats. Hinges and drawer slides should be marine-grade as well; Blum's Onyx finish or stainless equivalents.

Cabinetry That Won't Swell

Plywood box construction is non-negotiable on the North Shore. Even better: marine plywood boxes with a fully sealed exterior. Avoid MDF doors near showers — moisture finds its way in through the edges. Solid-wood shaker doors with a marine spar varnish hold up beautifully.

Ventilation Is Everything

A 110 CFM bath fan vented through the *roof* (not the soffit) is the minimum. Better: a humidity-sensing fan that runs automatically. Best: a dedicated HRV (heat recovery ventilator) for the entire wet zone — increasingly common in Hale'iwa custom homes.

Tile & Stone Choices

Porcelain beats natural stone on the North Shore. Travertine and limestone are too porous for salt environments. Large-format porcelain (24x48, 32x32) reduces grout lines that trap salt.

Beach House Style Without the Clichés

Skip the rope, anchors, and seashell motifs. The most timeless North Shore bathrooms lean into natural materials done well: white oak vanity, honed porcelain that looks like limestone, brushed gold PVD, and a single piece of art.
