Solar-Ready Kitchen Remodel Oahu | Heat Pumps

Ward Design CenterJune 9, 20267 min read

Hawaii has the highest electricity rates in the nation — HECO residential rates on Oahu hover near $0.42/kWh in 2026. The fastest way to cut that bill is rooftop solar paired with electrification of the kitchen and laundry. Here's how we design solar-ready kitchen remodels on Oahu.

    Start With the Electrical Panel

Most Oahu homes built before 2005 have 100A or 125A service. To support induction cooking, a heat-pump water heater, an EV charger, and future battery storage, you'll want 200A service minimum — ideally a smart panel like Span or Lumin that lets you prioritize loads when running off solar batteries.

Induction Cooktops Beat Gas in Hawaii

Two reasons induction wins on Oahu:

    1. No propane delivery costs — propane has gotten brutally expensive in Hawaii.

    2. Pairs with rooftop solar — cooking during daylight runs essentially free.

Bosch, Miele, and GE Profile all sell excellent 30" and 36" induction cooktops. Pair with a magnetic-base cookware set; cast iron also works.

    Heat-Pump Water Heaters

A heat-pump water heater (HPWH) uses one-third the electricity of a standard electric tank — and Hawaii Energy offers rebates up to $1,000. The Rheem ProTerra and AO Smith Voltex are the most-installed models on Oahu. They live in the garage or a utility closet, not under a kitchen counter.

    Under-Cabinet & Built-In Loads

    When you're already remodeling, hard-wire energy-efficient choices:

LED under-cabinet lighting with dimmers — fraction of the load of halogen.

Right-sized hood vent — 600 CFM is plenty for most Oahu kitchens (skip the 1,200 CFM commercial-style).

Refrigerator on its own 20A circuit — protects food during brownouts.

    Pre-Wire for Solar + Battery

Even if you're not installing solar today, ask your electrician to:

Run a 1.5" conduit from the panel to the attic for future PV wiring.

Add a backed-up loads subpanel for the fridge, one kitchen circuit, and the router.

Position the panel where a Tesla Powerwall or Enphase battery can sit nearby.
